Chikoli is a complete food in itself. This is a dish that my grandma and mom makes. I havent had this dish anywhere else, so am not sure if this is the real name of the dish or its a one made by my grandma :-)
Ingredients:
* Tur daal 250 gms
* Green Dill (Suwa leaves) 150 gms
* Onion 1 medium
* Tomatoes 2 medium
* Wheat flour 2 cups
* Red chilli powder 2 tsp
* Turmeric powder 1 tsp
* Dhaniya powder 1 tsp
* Salt
* Oil
Procedure:
Finely chop dill leaves. Add 1/3 dill in wheat flour along with 2 tbsp oil, salt, red chilli powder and make a dough. Keep aside for 10 minutes covered by a wet muslin cloth.
Boil tur daal in 4 cups of water.
Heat oil, fry finely chopped onions till light golden brown.
Add finely chopped tomatoes, all dry masala and cook till oil seperates.
Add boiled tur daal and the remaining dill leaves and cook for 5 minutes on high heat.
Divide wheat dough into 3-4 portions and roll them into a chapatti. Cut square pieces of it and add them to the boiling daal.
Once you add all the wheat squares, lower the heat and cook for half an hour on low heat or till the wheat squares are cooked.
Serve hot, topped with a spoon of clarified butter (ghee) and garnish with black pepper and lemon juice.

Hi Daagh,
ReplyDeleteNo, your grandma didn't make up this dish ! :) In Hyd. India, we also make this dish, but we call it chAkoli (chakoliya).
Ours is slightly diff. we don't add daal and use leftover cooked rotis for this dish. My MIL also adds haddiya (bones) or meat.
My mom also serves this with ghee and boiled eggs :)
Inshallah, will try your recipe w/daal.
